Training with Jim McCrossin:

Jim McCrossin, Flyers Head Athletic Trainer/Strength and Conditioning Coach, will be leading a warm-up the morning of the race.  Here's Jim's advice on training for the run ahead of time:

Hey, Flyers fans!

Looking forward to getting together with all of you for our first ever Flyers Charities Halloween 5K Fun Run & Walk. It should be a blast! Worried about running or walking a 5K? Well don’t be! A 5K is 3.1 miles and trust me, you’ll get lots of motivation, as well as enjoyment from participating in our event. Whether you’ve signed up for the 5K or the one-mile Fun Run & Walk, here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  • Make sure you have the right pair of walking or running shoes that are best for you. There are many local running stores throughout the region that would be glad to assist you in finding the correct pair of runners for your feet.
  • Remember to eat breakfast the morning of the event. You should neither feel starved or stuffed prior to the start of the 5 K. Running on an empty stomach may cause you to run out of energy. Your best bet is to eat 1 ½ to 2 hours before we start.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. Be careful not to overdress. Once you warm up, your body heat will make it feel 15-20 degrees warmer; so for example, if the temperature is above 55 degrees, you’ll probably be fine in wearing a sweatshirt and shorts.
  • Keep yourself well hydrated. Hydration begins long before the run and well afterwards.
  • A 5K walk / run requires a proper understanding of how to distribute your energy and pacing through every mile of the event. Be certain to train before your first 5K to understand what works best for your body. Don’t forget about form either, be sure to allow yourself a long smooth stride and swing your arms for balance and an additional push.
  • Running or walking with friend can add a great feeling of camaraderie to your run or walk. Your partner can keep you from running too fast upfront and keep you motivated if you are feeling sluggish in the middle or towards the end of the race.
  • Remember to cross the finish line on your own terms!

So let’s get outside today and enjoy this great fall weather that our Delaware Valley is serving up.  Let’s get moving!

I look forward to seeing all of you on October 27th for our first ever Flyers Charities Halloween 5K Fun Run & Walk. It should be a Howling experience.
